SCARA Robots

Evaluate SCARA robots for planar assembly, pick-and-place and material transfer. Compare motion, payload, cycle-time and integration requirements before choosing a configuration.

Engineering selection guide

When a SCARA architecture fits the task.

SCARA robots combine planar arm motion with a vertical axis and tool rotation. They are commonly considered for repetitive insertion, assembly and transfer tasks where the required tool orientations fit that motion envelope.

  • Working envelope: map pickup, placement and approach positions, vertical travel and fixture clearance rather than relying on a single reach figure.
  • Load and tooling: include gripper mass, part inertia, cables and process forces when assessing the mechanical and control requirements.
  • Cycle evidence: evaluate representative paths, settling time, vision or inspection delays and part presentation; maximum catalog speed is not a demonstrated production cycle.
  • Alternatives: consider an articulated arm when additional orientation is needed, or a parallel arrangement when its handling envelope better matches the process.
